Belly Boat + Deeper Sonar = The Ultimate Combo for Big, Deep Lakes

Balage

One of my all-time favorite ways to fish is lure fishing from a belly boat on a big, deep lake. The first time I visited one of these, I brought along my Deeper Pro sonar—of course. With depths reaching up to 22 meters, it’s a total game-changer to know where the fish are actually hanging out.

That trip landed me my personal best perch: a stunning 50 cm slab. No way I would’ve found it without the sonar. Cheating? Maybe. But hey, I used to cheat on high school tests too—and I don’t regret either one. Dropping 250 euros on a sonar is a solid investment if it saves you from blindly casting into empty water all day.

What Do I Look For on the Sonar?

Schools of baitfish
If I spot a tight school of small fish, there’s a high chance predators are lurking just below or off to the side.

Groups of perch
Sometimes it’s not a bait ball, but a handful of solid marks—5 or 6 good-sized fish. That’s often a pack of bigger perch cruising together. I’ll drop my lure right in front of them and mimic a panicked baitfish. That exact move landed me my 50 cm PB perch.

Here’s a perfect example of why I love using sonar. You can clearly see a group of fish reacting to my lure—those curved marks show them tracking it in real time. I ended up catching two of them: one was a solid 35 cm perch, and the other was my personal best. You can see the whole moment unfold on my TikTok

Structure and drop-offs
Interesting bottom features usually mean hiding spots—for both prey and predator fish. I save those locations and build a mental map of hot zones to hit next time.

When I’m feeling lazy (or let’s say tactical), I just float and vertically jig a vibrating lure. With the sonar, I can see when a curious pike starts sneaking up on it. As soon as I see that blip closing in, I make the lure dance like it owes me money.
